The Boston College athletics community lost one of its legends Sunday morning when former football and hockey star and long-time Arlington hockey coach Ed Burns passed away at the age of 93 from natural causes.

Burns was a skilled quarterback in football and daring wing in hockey. His promising varsity career was shortened by military service with the United States Marine Corps during World War II.

He was a member of the 1942 Orange Bowl team as well as the 1942 BC hockey club that captured the AAU National Championship.

Following graduation, he embarked on a highly-successful secondary school coaching career, leading Arlington (Mass.) High School to numerous state and league championships in both football and hockey.

He was inducted into the Boston College Varsity Club Athletic Hall of Fame in 1987.
